Digital tools for modern builders: How technology is transforming home construction
Technology is becoming the centre of change in the home construction industry. Today, builders and contractors have at their disposal an array of digital tools which allow homes to be constructed, in a more efficient, fast and accurate manner. From communicating, planning and executing a project to designing and building a home, technological tools are revolutionizing home construction – and for the better.
Let us find out some of the most popular technologies used by builders and developers and how such technologies impact the building process.
1. Building Information Modelling (BIM)
BIM is an interactive computer-generated modelling of a sequential process of house construction together with structural and functional aspects. By employing this technology, builders have an opportunity to work on a project that has a common point of reference. It improves the accuracy of schedules and cost estimates and ensures that projects are complete and done within planned budgets. This technology eliminates costly time lags and serves the home builder’s steps to building a house faster.
2. Drones for site surveys
Unmanned tools such as drones have proved to be very important in house building since they enhance efficiency as well as safety. For instance, site surveillance, inspection, photo and video shooting, construction site monitoring, etc. With these systems, the builders can watch progress, assess conditions, and occasionally see problem areas before they become way too expensive to resolve.
3. Virtual reality
The other revolutionary technology in the home-building world is virtual reality (VR). This has completely transformed the design aspect because now one can visually ‘walk through’ a house before a single brick of the house has been put in place.
Communication is also made easier via VR for developers, wherein design ideas can be discussed and issues can be pointed out before proceeding with the home-building process.
4. 3D printing for custom components
Contrary to the earlier case where 3D printing dominated only prototype production, it is now being increasingly employed in construction sites. Although building entire structures with a single 3D printer has not been realised, 3D printers are being used to construct small components of homes.
This technology reduces nearly all labour costs, scales down the house building construction time nearly to a level that is unthinkable under normal circumstances, and reduces wastage of materials by a very large percentage which makes this method one of the safest for the environment when doing home building constructions.
5. Construction Management Software
Tools such as Procore, Buildertrend, and Xpedeon allow for all aspects of construction management to be in one place including, planning, scheduling and communication. This software also helps in managing costs effectively since it allows for constant monitoring of expenses while facilitating changes to be made. The solution allows for creating posts for your team members, easily sharing important updates, and resolving various problems, making the team efficient.
It is therefore evident that the integration of digital tools in home construction is not a luxury but a necessity for modern builders. Technology has indeed impacted the home construction industry by bringing more efficiency, less waste, and better communication in the construction process. These tools have been adopted to not only improve and transform the outcomes of construction projects but also to set new paths for modern builders.
